1. What is Gullah/Geechee?

Geechee/Gullah, a dialect brought to the Carolina Sea Islands by slaves from West Africa during the peak of the slave trade. Slaves came from many tribes and spoke many different languages.   Africans had to find a way to communicate with each other and their slave masters.  Therefore, they found similarities in their many African dialects and mixed it with English to form   what is called Creole, “Gullah/Geechee” (a blend of dialects and cultures).

Historians believe that the word Gullah originated from Angola, the West African country from which many Africans were imported.  African –American linguist, Lorenzo D. Turner attributed the word Gullah to (Gola) a small tribe on the Sierra Leone-Liberia border.

The word Geechee originates from the word Kisee pronounced (Geezee) an African tribe who lived in an area adjoining Sierre Leone, West Africa.

GEECHEE a blending of languages, cultures and traditions.

2. What does your name "Emiola" mean?

Emiola is a West African name which means "spirit of honor". All my life I have embraced the vibrant African culture and its many rituals. To my knowledge, most birth names are significant of something very proud and special. Thus, through the Yuroba Religion I acquired the name Emiola. I feel, that If our names have greatness attached to them we will walk and live in it.
